Children of Divorce
By Steven Fales | July 19, 2010
One of the most painful events of my life was my parent’s divorce. This followed only by my own. And so my kids and I have something in common. We are all children of divorce.
Here is something I found and pasted to a card. I’ve had it a long time. I can’t remember who wrote it or where it’s from. It’s probably in Chicken Soup for the Soul or something, where all anonymous prose and poems go!
“Blessed are the children of divorced parents who can remain neutral — which is always difficult and sometimes impossible — without appearing two-faced and hypocritical. For those of you who haven’t taken sides, but are faced with the prospect, a word of advice: Out of loyalty to no one should you permit yourself to be locked out of anyone’s life.
If a parent behaves in a manner that you consider hateful — hate the sin, but love the sinner. Forgive your parents for their wrong-doing, just as they have forgiven you. I know I sound like Mary Poppins, but it’s the only way to keep peace in the family — even when the family is blown to smithereens.”
And I would add: “Get thee to Al-Anon!”
